One of a trio of idyllic Indonesian islands situated just off the north west coast of Lombok, a 90-minute boat ride from Bali. Gili Air is the perfect mix of bustling Gili Trawangan and relaxed Gili Meno. The dazzling white sand, jewel-like waters and welcoming locals instantly charm all who visit Gili Air. With no motorised vehicles and an infectious laid-back atmosphere, it is the perfect place to get stuck for a few weeks.
The local restaurants are called “warungs” and are spread out on most of the Gili Air streets. They serve typical Indonesian food such as Mie goreng and Nasi goreng as well as dishes from the Lombok region like the Plecin Kangkung, the region’s most popular vegetable dish made of water spinach and spicy chili sauce! There are also plenty of places you can pick up a Nasi Bungkus (take away rice) to eat at your leisure anywhere you want! If the pallet isn’t yet accustomed to the local spices, or your stomach is craving for Western food, there are plenty of restaurants offering local and western dishes, or even fully Western cuisine! BBQ on the beach, pizza, pasta, burgers, wraps there is something for everyone! The vegans and vegetarians will also find some yummy organic options. There are also plenty of bars on the beach, some with live music during daytime or night time, and a weekly party on the beach to party all night long if you like dancing under the stars. And when you might want to have a rest from diving, there are yoga classes, pilates classes, cooking classes, salsa classes, paddle board tours and some sun bed to relax on the beach too! There are also plenty of opportunities to get involved in the local community and conservation activities: weekly beach clean ups, workshops and talks.
